My Iligan
Digital Story Telling Contest
Sponsor: LGU of Iligan and Sk Federation
Taboan Mindanao in partnership with Balay Iligan Inc. , as part of its advocacy to amplify the voice of the Mindanaon in the internet, is promoting digital story telling as a communications tool that helps individuals and groups to connect with each other, share their experiences and reflect on practice in a way that energizes and creates lasting bonds.
Digital Stories are a modern twist to the age-old art of storytelling. Digital Story telling combines various media such as photos, music, video as well as voice-overs to create powerful stories that can be broadcast in the internet or distributed through optical media. These personal stories can illuminate complex patterns and deeper truths and one should never underestimate the power of the particular. The process of telling a story – and seeing it touch other people can be empowering. Being touched by the stories of others makes a difference to bonds of trust, insights as well as sends a strong signal that many voices and perspectives are valued.
My Iligan, is a digital story telling contest open to all highschool and college students. Entries are autobiographical digital pieces that tell the story of connection to a place particularly Iligan City. Through the contest, students become producers of media, not just consumers, building an understanding of media literacy through authentic learning. The contest culminates in a celebration and awards ceremony, honoring the efforts of the participants and celebrating the winning pieces.
All winning entries will be uploaded to Taboan Mindanao where it can be viewed by thousands of people from all over the world. The website will provide a venue for Iligan’s youth to be heard and hopefully generate interest for Iligan City itself.
Objectives:
Raise awareness on the potentials of Digital Story Telling as an alternative form of expression and knowledge sharing.
Promote Iligan City through the use of social media.
Provide a platform to amplify the voices of Iligan City’s youth.
Contest Theme
The theme for the contest will be about STORIES ABOUT LOCATIONS in this case Iligan City. What places here in Iligan that you have fond memories, places that you hold dear or places that played a significant role in your growing up years. These are just a few questions that will guide the contestants in making their digital stories. Stories about locations, specific or vast, capture memories. Geographical places hold intense memories and emotional significance in our lives. Whether the participants have a fond memory of spending childhood summers on a grandparent’s farm or the beach, reconciling stories and emotions of these places is a useful exercise in understanding ourselves.
