We've been talking a lot about on how to protect our environment, but we do not act on it. I believe one of the best way of protecting our environment is to follow the simple steps of "proper waste disposal."
This habit must be followed religiously and be strictly taught to young children, at home and in school.
I strongly believe that what happened in Luzon was brought about by a mere neglect of following proper waste disposal. Look at Pasig River and Laguna de Bay and other water ways in Luzon. As early as '80s there were already measures and laws to protect these water ways but were simply neglected by the community around these water ways.
In our school, I have been trying to teach our pupils to segregate their garbage. We put up a vermi compost facility where biodegradable waste are disposed while the non-biodegradable materials are disposed in a garbage pit.
We are contemplating to put up a Material and Recovery Facility (MRF) where recyclable non-biodegradable materials will be stored.
