Environmentalists to Nograles: stop fooling the people, Charter Change is anti-Filipino and anti-environment

Fellow environmentalists,

I would like to share this statement from environmental group Panalipdan on the environmentalists stand on Arroyo's Charter Change. Thanks. Read to empower towards biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and Filipino people's liberation. Big thanks.

Environmentalists to Nograles: stop fooling the people, Charter Change is anti-Filipino and anti-environment

Panalipdan-Southern Mindanao Region, a broad alliance of environmentalists and peoples’ organizations, lambasted today House Speaker Prospero Nograles for pushing the Charter Change which seeks to allow 100% foreign ownership of Philippine natural resources.

Nograles is the author of House Resolution 737, which seeks to scrap the 40% limit of foreign ownership of lands, resources and enterprises and has reportedly gathered 163 signatures of the congressmen/women.

The green group believes that Arroyo-engineered charter change also aims to add more teeth to the already notorious 1995 Philippine Mining (Republic Act 7942), that the Supreme Court again affirmed in 2005.

Amending the 1987 Constitution is to pave way to intensified environment and economic plunder and degradation due to liberalized mining and privatization of freshwater and energy resources.

The full-blown implementation of a liberalized, privatized, and deregulated mining industry will come into reality once charter change has been enacted. The constitutional overhaul will allow 100% foreign-ownership of our lands and the exploitation of our natural resources. Charter change will actually further open the country to unbridled foreign exploitation and plunder.

No amount of touted revenues and compensation can pay for the permanent damage to the environment, the displacement of indigenous communities, and the loss of lives and livelihood that will result from large-scale and foreign mining.

It is very disgusting that the lessons from our people’s tragic experiences with large-scale foreign mining in Boac, Marinduque; Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte; Rapu-rapu, Albay; Didipio, Nueva Viscaya; Masara, Maco, ComVal Province; Diwalwal, Monkayo, ComVal; and Surigao del Norte are ignored by the Arroyo government. It should be noted that mining has insignificant contribution to the domestic economy and employment while no measures have been put in place to reverse the continuing damages to the ecosystems and people of the said areas.

The green group challenged Nograles to go to these areas and see for himself what local communities have lost: indigenous people’s ancestral domain, once productive farmlands, biological diversity, pristine rivers and marine ecosystems.

Charter Change for liberalization will further aggravate landlessness, land-use conversion, whole-sale exploitation of biodiversity and natural resources, food insecurity, and the destruction of environment. Filipinos will be deprived of the right to use the country’s resources for their own benefit. Local industry and agriculture, which cannot comprete with big transnational corporations, will also be destroyed.

Environmentalists will heighten the opposition to the Arroyo-engineered Charter Change and join the Filipino people’s struggle for genuine freedom, democracy, just and sustainable society.##

Hello Cris,

Pwede po kayo mag-isponsor ng mga fora to intensify our advocacy and debate against Arroyo's Charter Change. Btw, there is now a growing citizens' opposition to Arroyo's Charter Change. As an environmentalist practicing ecological waste management, dapat lang na ilagay sa basura ang Charter Change at isali na rin si Gloria. Thanks.

Amaw man jud na si Prospero Nogi oi......Kurakot pa jud.....

By advocating the CHA-CHA, that made him the #1 enemy of Filipinos......He is daft! Even 40% is really huge to be a share of ALIENS outside the Philippines. He never focuses on the issues of hungry Filipinos especially the farmers....tapos dungagan pa niyag problema....

Pakamatay Nogi oi!!!! ugma dayon......he's annoying...)

Shame on them!
We should never let this happen to us...
Let us stop betraying our own kind in our own land...
Let us not permit ourselves to ride in their bandwagon and be myopic like them.

Shame on them when they can always go after their own kind and do their best
to retrieve what could be retrieved from the huge bulk of what's been stolen from us all.

Will there be any concrete good emanating from those positions that they are occupying?

After having said what we've said here, GOD FORBID that there will appear again
another trapo or wannabe who will ride on this and exploit the whole issue again for selfish ends.

Mindanaoans,

Nograles, GMA and other political leaders in position who have done do much injustice to the people because of their grees for power and wealth are out to even sell the Filipino Patrimony to other nations. They are so greedy that they are willing to sell even thair own children and the rights of their descendants.

If we allow them to continue doing that by doing nothing, than we are to blame.

hi juland! thanks for posting this.
yes, i agree! nograles' bill opening 100% foreign ownership to Filipino natural resources will exacerbate the sorry state of our environment.
we here in cagayan de oro city, i being the vice president of the mindanao media advocates for environment preservation (mmaep), inc. opposes nogra's move to amend the constitution as this time. but we are open to amend the constitution AFTER GMA steps out of office in the palace by the stinking pasig river. and the only safe way to amend the constitution is by/through constitutional convention (concon) and NOT conass.
nogra's move of convening congress into conass only bolsters my strong contention that our dishonorable con-grease-men or conmen (although there are a few who are really honorable?) are really trying to con our assess.
let's not allow them. let's get up from our assess and go to the street and fight these con-grease-men led by nogra.

Thanks for the info! Tuta gyod ni si Nogie ug GMA sa foreign investors..For me, i'll campaign to all the people in some areas here in the province of Surigao del Sur not to vote these kind government officials gusto nga magpaburot sa ilang bulsa through the expense of other people especially the farmers and other sectors in the society. Let us fight against this another motive nga paglinla sa katawhan, this so called "CHA-CHA.. karon gani nga 40 % lang ang ownership sa foreign investors grabe na gani ang pagkaguba sa atong kinaiyahan ug daghan na displaced nga mga tao, how much more kung tagaan sila ug full ownership. Let us all go out and protest this anomalous moved of these Ton-grease-men!

Oh God, why should the Speaker Nograles prove to be our NIGHTMARE?!

Sana, tama na yung ini-lobby nya by hook or by crook (na natuloy nga against all odds) ang pagpapa-repair ng Batasan Building sa kalagitnaan ng pagdarahop natin kamakailan lamang. Hindi natin maubos-maisip, imagin-in mo ang humigit-kumulang na P100M expended for said repairworks where he would hold his office (nagkamali kasing bombahin, eh)... tsk. tsk...

WOW, parang there's no more tomorrow the way they ransack the treasury!

Latest news thus reads:

MANILA, Philippines—Prof. Walden Bello of the Freedom from Debt Coalition on Monday morning took his oath of office as the second representative of party-list Akbayan.

He took his oath before Secretary General Marilyn Yap.

Bello's first act is to endorse the impeachment complaint against the Ombudsman.

He also told reporters that one of his goals is to draw up an emergency economic program in light of the worldwide financial crunch.

He lamented that the administration seems to be in denial about the crisis.

Why did Congress make every attempt to amend our Constitution "to bring in foreign investments so as to solve our economic crisis"? Why did this current Administration start acceding (but we protested) to the foreign buyers' demand to a 100% ownership of our land?

To my brother rebels

Wake up Mindanaoans
and do not hold on to your guns
do not give them an excuse
to stay longer and make use

of our women!
of our land!
of our fight
to survive...

To our local government
It was all so internal,
but we have invited more troubles
and trouble-makers to our shores
by refusing to accept that it is all so:
internal.
family matters.
filipino concerns only.
